Why I'm a PWAP Charity Champion: Why Beyond Blue? I was recently asked why I had pledged support to Beyond Blue; and it got me to thinking -  ?

Why Beyond Blue?

An organisation solely conceived and dedicated to the detection, understanding, and treatment of Depression, a silent but voracious killer in our society!

Why Beyond Blue?

Because it is for men; you know, that gender that is simply too strong and self-confident to ever have to recognise that there may be a problem that needs to be talked about!

That same meat-headed sex that finds it so hard to talk of anything outside the ‘real’ and the ‘practical’ situations of life. If it’s not work, sports, cars, business, home or holidays, then how many blokes want to know?

There are so many blokes that are too proud and pig-headed to accept what they may perceive to be a failing, or may be viewed as that by others, and so decide to just stoically carry on!

Why Beyond Blue?

Because it can look behind the facade! An injury is easy to spot, be it a bruise, splinter, sprain, gaping wound, broken limb or bloodied nose, it is pretty hard to ignore!

An illness of the body can be detected in the temperature, pulse, blood pressure, the rumbling gut, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, or festering it may generate; once again, making it impossible to dismiss.

However, and illness of the mind needs special skills to even spot its initial existence, let alone set a path toward treatment. As insidious, furtive, covert and cruel as a cancer, and just as devastating, it tears through, not your flesh and organs, but the very root of your being; your mind!

Why Beyond Blue?

Depression doesn’t discriminate! It is by far the most politically correct disease we have, far less choosy than gambling or alcohol, Depression can attack rich or poor, weak or strong, failing or successful, any colour or race, famous or anonymous! No-one is left out!

Why Beyond Blue?

Any problem, once it is understood, becomes halved, at the very least! The burden of Depression cannot be borne solely by the sufferer, often in total ignorance, or denial. The moment of recognition of the disease is the first easing of that burden, and the path to walking tall again!

Why Beyond Blue?

Through a dozen or so years as a Funeral Celebrant, I have always maintained that the best cure for grief is conversation, for in that comes understanding and relief.

I have also often had to write the heartbreaking tale of suicide, the logical and tragic end of the unchecked road of Depression, and seen so often, from a fresh and remote viewpoint, how this just didn’t have to be, and that if we’d simply found a way to talk about the problem, the path would have certainly turned toward a brighter destination! So let’s start the conversation on the right side of the grief! Now!

Why Beyond Blue?

Why the bloody hell not!

Three million Australians are currently experiencing anxiety or depression. Every day, seven people take their own lives.

Because this affects all of us, we’re equipping everyone in Australia with the knowledge and skills to protect their own mental health. We’re giving people the confidence to support those around them, and making anxiety, depression and suicide part of everyday conversations.

And as well as tackling stigma, prejudice and discrimination, we’re breaking down the barriers that prevent people from speaking up and reaching out.

We're here for everyone in Australia – at work, home, school, university, online, and in communities across the country.
